Electricity Usage Guide in Korea

Voltage and Plug Types in Korea

Korea uses a voltage of 220V at 60Hz, and the standard plug type is Type F. Type F plugs have two round pins and grounding clips. While similar to Type C plugs used in the EU, the pin diameter may vary, requiring careful attention when using foreign plugs.

Difference Between EU Plugs and Korean Plugs

Although EU Type C plugs look similar to Korea’s Type F plugs, the pin size difference can cause loose connections or poor contact. It is recommended to use an appropriate adapter for safe use.

Using 110V Appliances

If you bring 110V appliances to Korea, a voltage converter (step-down transformer) is necessary. Simple plug adapters (commonly called "pig noses") do not convert voltage. Directly plugging a 110V device into a 220V outlet can damage the appliance or pose fire risks. Always use a transformer to reduce voltage to 110V before use.

Free Voltage Devices

Some devices support a voltage range from 100V to 240V, known as "free voltage" devices. These can be used without a transformer by simply using a plug adapter. Look for labels like "Input: 100-240V" to identify such devices.

Additional Tips

  • Choose the right transformer: Ensure the transformer's capacity matches or exceeds the device’s power consumption.
  • Use certified products: Always use safety-certified adapters and transformers to prevent accidents.
  • Consider energy efficiency: Using a transformer may increase energy costs, so consider purchasing appliances compatible with 220V for long-term savings.
  • Energy loss with transformers: Keep in mind that transformers can consume additional energy, leading to slightly higher electricity bills.
